Cervical Cancer Screening

Cervical Cancer Screening

Serving Patients in Amherst, Buffalo, & Tonawanda, NY

There are many things women can do to stay on top of their health. One of these things includes getting an annual pap smear test and a pelvic exam. During this test, the doctors at Suburban Women’s Healthcare, PC will collect and examine cells from your cervix, the opening to the uterus. This test will screen for inflammation and infections, as well as abnormal or precancerous cells.

Anyone with a cervix is at risk for cervical cancer, especially those over the age of 30. It is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition if it is left untreated. This cancer is generally caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted infection. It is not uncommon for sexually active people to get HPV at some point in their lives, but few will get cervical cancer. Regular screenings can help detect cancer early enough to be treated and carry out a long and fulfilling life.

How Often Do You Need Screening?

The frequency of pelvic exams and Pap smears for women depends on factors like age, medical history, and overall health. Here’s a general guideline:

Pelvic Exams

  • Annual Exams: Many healthcare providers recommend a pelvic exam as part of a woman’s annual wellness visit starting at age 21, even if a Pap smear isn’t needed every year.
  • Individual Needs: The frequency may vary based on symptoms, medical history, or specific health concerns.

Pap Smears

  • Ages 21-29: Women should have a Pap smear every 3 years if results are normal.
  • Ages 30-65: Women can choose one of the following:
    • A Pap smear every 3 years.
    • A Pap smear combined with HPV testing (co-testing) every 5 years.
    • HPV testing alone every 5 years.
  • Over 65: Women who have had regular screenings with normal results may no longer need Pap smears. However, this should be confirmed with a healthcare provider.

Special Considerations

  • Women with a history of abnormal Pap smears, cervical cancer, or certain medical conditions (like HIV or a weakened immune system) may need more frequent screenings.
  • Women who have had a hysterectomy may not need Pap smears, depending on the reason for the surgery and whether the cervix was removed.

It’s always best to consult with us to determine the right screening schedule based on your individual health needs.

Early Signs of Cervical Cancer:

  • Abnormal Bleeding: Between periods, after sex, or post-menopause.
  • Unusual Discharge: Watery, bloody, or foul-smelling.
  • Pain: During intercourse or persistent pelvic pain.
  • Urinary Issues: Pain or difficulty urinating.
  • Bowel Changes: Blood in stool or trouble with bowel movements (advanced cases).

If you notice these symptoms, see a doctor promptly. Regular Pap smears, HPV testing, and vaccination are key for early detection and prevention.
