Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in and around the muscular wall of the uterus. There are three different names for fibroids based on where they grow.
Subserosal Fibroids: Fibroids that grow on the outside of the uterus.
Intramural Fibroids: Fibroids that grow inside the muscle of the uterus.
Submucosal Fibroids: Fibroids that grow in the uterine cavity.
Here are some signs that you may need fibroid treatment.
-Heavy or painful periods
-Abdominal pain
-Lower back pain
-Frequent need to urinate
-Constipation
-Pain or discomfort during sex
-Pressure on the bladder or rectum
Medications: Over-the-counter pain relievers may be enough for women with moderately painful symptoms from fibroids. However, hormone therapy is a fibroid treatment that is an option for fibroids that are causing a lot of pain. Birth control pills, hormonal IUDs, or hormonal injections can help control heavy bleeding and reduce the size of fibroids.
Uterine Artery Embolization: This procedure involves blocking the blood vessels that supply blood to the fibroid, causing it to shrink and die.
Myomectomy: Surgery to remove the fibroids while leaving the uterus intact. It can be performed through various methods, including laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, or open surgery.
Hysterectomy: Surgical removal of the uterus. It is a definitive treatment and is considered for women who do not wish to have children in the future or when other treatments have not been effective.
