What to Do if You Notice Abnormal Bleeding or Vaginal Discharge

We are all familiar with our regular menstrual cycle, but if something happens that’s out of the ordinary it can be concerning. If you notice abnormal bleeding or vaginal discharge, it can sometimes mean that something is wrong; however, it is usually pointing to something more minor. Here are some of the most common causes of abnormal bleeding:

• Pregnancy: Almost 25% of women experience some bleeding during their first trimester of pregnancy. If you notice more than light spotting during your pregnancy, especially after the first trimester, reach out to our office right away.
• Hormone Imbalance: Imbalanced hormones can affect your period’s schedule, resulting in abnormal bleeding throughout your cycle. 
• Birth Control Side Effect: Everyone reacts differently to birth control; if you’ve recently started a new method and you’re noticing irregular vaginal discharge or abnormal bleeding, it could be a side effect.
• Menopause: Menopause doesn’t happen immediately; you could experience symptoms for years, including light and irregular bleeding that happens outside your normal period.
• Thyroid Disease: If your thyroid is overactive or underactive, it can impact your periods or vaginal discharge. You could notice other symptoms as well.
• PCOS: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a hormone disorder that can cause irregular periods, excessive body hair, and other effects. We can work with you to manage this condition.

Different Types of Vaginal Discharge

• White – White vaginal discharge can be healthy, but if it is accompanied by itchiness, then you may have a yeast infection. If you suspect you have a yeast infection, contact your doctor, so you can get medicine to treat it.
• Clear – Clear vaginal discharge is usually just a sign of a healthy reproductive system and ovulation. However, it can also be a sign of pregnancy, so if you have clear discharge and a missed period you may want to take a pregnancy test.
• Yellowish green – Yellow or green vaginal discharge is a sign of infection. Seek advice and treatment from a medical professional if you are dealing with green or yellow discharge.
• Red – Red vaginal discharge before your period is typically just a sign that your period will be starting soon. However, if you are not expecting your period, it may be a sign of a cervical infection so schedule an appointment with a doctor as soon as possible.
• Pink – Pink vaginal discharge is typically a sign that your vagina is irritated or implantation bleeding, which is a sign of pregnancy. If you’ve missed your period and see what seems to be pink discharge, you should take a pregnancy test.

What is an Annual Pap Smear?

A pap smear exam is a test performed on a sample of cells from a woman’s cervix to check for any issues or abnormalities such as signs of cervical cancer. It is generally recommended that women should start receiving these tests at the age of 21, typically as a part of an annual women’s health checkup or pelvic exam. As a woman, it is incredibly important to receive annual pap smears from your health provider as it is the best method to detect early signs of cervical cancer when it is most treatable. In addition, cervical cancer screenings can sometimes also be used to test for HPV and other STD’s.
